How Purohit Performs Shani Shanti Homa

1. Preparations:

   • Sacred Space: The Purohit prepares a clean and sanctified area for the Homa, ensuring it is free from distractions. A Homa Kund (fire altar) is set up, and the space is purified with holy water, turmeric, and kumkum (vermilion powder).
   • Shani Yantra or Image: An image or yantra (sacred geometric symbol) of Lord Shani is placed near the Homa Kund. Shani’s yantra is typically black or blue in color, symbolizing Saturn’s energies.
   • Offerings: The ritual requires several offerings, such as black sesame seeds, ghee, camphor, fruits, betel leaves, coconuts, black cloth, and mustard oil. Blue flowers are also important, as they are associated with Lord Shani.

2. Purification and Sankalpa:

   • The Purohit begins with Achamana (self-purification) to cleanse the body and mind. Water is sprinkled over the participants and offerings to purify the environment.
   • A Sankalpa is made, where the devotee declares their intention for performing the Homa. The Sankalpa typically includes prayers for the removal of suffering, obstacles, and misfortunes caused by Shani’s malefic effects.

3. Invocation of Lord Ganesha:

   • As with most Vedic rituals, the Purohit begins by invoking Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. This is done to ensure that the ritual is free from any hindrances.
   • The Ganapati Atharvasirsha or other Ganesha mantras are chanted, and offerings like modaks (sweet dumplings) are made to Lord Ganesha.

5. Chanting Shani Mantras:

     • "Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah"

6. Shani Stotra and Shani Ashtakshara Mantra:

   • The Purohit recites the Shani Stotra, a hymn dedicated to Lord Shani, or the Shani Ashtakshara Mantra, which consists of eight syllables:
     • "Om Hraam Hreem Hroum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah"
   • These verses and mantras are chanted to invoke the blessings of Lord Shani for peace and relief from difficulties.

7. Offerings to the Fire:

   • The Purohit offers black sesame seeds, rice, ghee, mustard oil, and betel leaves into the fire while chanting the Shani Mantras. These offerings are made with each round of chanting to ensure that Shani’s energies are harmonized and transformed into blessings for the devotee.
   • Special offerings such as blue flowers and black cloth are also placed near the fire or the image of Lord Shani to honor him and to symbolize the appeasement of his wrath.

8. Aarti and Final Prayers:

   • After the offerings, the ritual concludes with Mangal Aarti, where the camphor light is waved in front of Lord Shani’s image or yantra.

9. Prasad Distribution:

   • After the ritual, the Vibhuti (sacred ash) from the fire is distributed to all participants. It is believed to carry the blessings of Lord Shani and helps to remove negative influences.
